The curtain has been called for The CW's remaining low-rated (but fan favourite) series. At the annual 2018-2019 Upfronts, the youth-skewing network revealed that three of their returning series will be coming to an end in the upcoming TV season. The end had to come sometime for these TV shows, but it's sad to see!
Both iZombie and Jane The Virgin will be ending at the end of their fifth season. In the case of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the low-rated show will be ending after four seasons.
While none were superstars in the ratings, all three had built dedicated followings and attention from both fans and critics alike. Jane The Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend earned wins at prestigious awards shows, like the Golden Globes - this was the first time that The CW had been in contention at all. iZombie, on the other hand, had built a cult fan following and earned a financial deal thanks to Netflix streaming.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's final season will premiere this fall on Fridays, while iZombie and Jane The Virgin are being held to midseason. None of the shows will be placed on Sunday, which The CW recently announced as their newest day for their weekly schedule.
Out of the three shows, I've watched iZombie the most. I love this show! Thanks to the Netflix deal, I've been keeping up with the weekly episodes (and I also have a Funko toy of Liv). Jane The Virgin is also another one that grew on me over the years. I'm a little behind on the recent season, but it's a fun telenovela with great characters.

Is this the best month ever?! I think it might be. The CW has recently announced two renewals for their current midseason shows. Riverdale, a dark interpretation based on the Archie Comics, and The 100, based on the novel of the same name, are coming back for another season.
This is incredible news! Not just because I am a fan (I currently cover Riverdale on TV Fanatic - check it out), but also because these are great shows. With these renewals, Riverdale will be back for a second season while The 100 will get a fifth season.
Riverdale and The 100 join a long list of other shows already renewed by The CW. However, iZombie, The Originals, Frequency and No Tomorrow are currently left up in the air. If I was a betting man and had to make a few guesses, I think it's going to come down between iZombie and The Originals. No Tomorrow and Frequency didn't have the same media attention as the other shows on the network. The other two are current staples on the network and have already produced plenty of episodes for syndication/Netflix/Hulu.
As much as I love both iZombie and The Originals, I think The Originals may edge out the former for a chance at renewal. I recently did a binge-watch of iZombie and it seems like it's gearing up for a final storyline with the zombie war. The Originals is similar to The Vampire Diaries, as in they could find a reason to keep it going for a while. On the other hand, it may be cheaper to produce iZombie instead. We're talking about The CW here, nobody knows what will happen until it's decided.

Good news for our heroes and villains: You'll live to see another day! It's a super-sized renewal surprise for some of our favourite geeky shows at The CW.
Ahead of the Television Critics Association, the network handed out renewals to seven of their fall shows. Among the TV series getting the renewals is breakout hit The Flash, which will see a fourth season, and the recent CBS port Sugergirl that will return for a third season. Included in the list is Arrow (Season 6), Jane The Virgin (Season 4), Supernatural (Season 13), DC's Legends of Tomorrow (Season 3), and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Season 3).
I'm excited for this news! As many of you who have been following this blog for awhile (or follow me on social media) know, I love shows from The CW. There is always a show I'm following or have sitting on my binge-watch list. Some of the shows that were announced are ones I'm currently following now, like Jane The Virgin and The Flash to name a few. But even with the good news, there's still some pressure.
Nothing has been revealed yet about The CW's other shows: The Originals, The 100 and iZombie, as well as freshman shows Frequency, No Tomorrow and the yet to air Riverdale. The Vampire Diaries and Reign were already cancelled and will see their proper series finales later this year.

YES!!! The horror fan in me is jumping at this latest TV news. FX has announced they have renewed horror-anthology series American Horror Story for another two seasons: Season Eight and Season Nine. This renewal is well in advance of the seventh season later this year.
The series, which has tackled themes like witchcraft, a haunted asylum and now reality TV, is a successful show for the cable network. AHS continues to snag awards and, if I do say so, the series has been given new life with the refreshing take of American Horror Story: Roanoke. There's no word yet on which cast members will return to the show, but so far Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are confirmed.
This extended renewal means that American Horror Story will continue into 2019. There is no indication if the show will end at that date.
In other news, Showtime has renewed The Affair for a fourth season. I haven't started watching this series, but I've heard good things about it - I just have too much on my binge-watching plate to start this one yet.
With all the good news, there does need to be some cancellation updates. Good Girls Revolt from Amazon is officially done. No other network is picking it up; this one is dead.

There's a new queen bee ruling the world of smize and booty tooch, and the choice may be a bit surprising. Revealed Friday by VH1 (and initially appearing on Deadline), British pop singer Rita Ora will serve as host of America's Next Top Model when it moves over to VH1 for its new season. Departing host Tyra Banks will still serve as executive producer.
Rita Ora, who has amassed hits in the U.K. and some familiarity in North America, has partly made her TV judging career with U.K. shows, like The X Factor. Ora will be joined on the judging panel with:
- Paper Magazine Chief Creative Officer Drew Elliott
- Celebrity stylist Law Roach
- Supermodel Ashley Graham
I'm ecstatic that America's Next Top Model is coming back to TV. I'm a reality TV fan and, if you can believe, I've watched every season of the show. While the eliminations and winners are highly debatable (I'm talking heated back-and-forth with friends), this is a guilty pleasure I need in my life.
Do you think Rita Ora will live up to Tyra's legacy? Post your comments below.
Alright...let's take a minute and breathe for a moment. Breathe. MTV has announced that Faking It, their underrated and witty teen comedy, has been cancelled after three seasons. Plagued with low viewership over the years, the ratings seem to be the cause for the decision. The upcoming season finale will serve as the series finale.
Faking It focused on two best friends, Amy and Karma, who initially pretended to be lesbians to gain popularity at their progressive Texas high school. In actuality, Amy was dealing with her secret feelings for Karma, and Karma's crush on popular jock, Liam.
I'm not ready to see the show end! I love the witty one-liners of the characters and their self-aware nature; it's almost like a non-horror Scream. The series finale of Faking It will air May 17, 2016 on MTV.

What is happening at ABC?! The alphabet network is clearing house, with most of their bubble shows getting the swift cancellation axe. On Thursday, ABC revealed that several programs, including the long-running Castle and Nashville, were among their latest cancellations. In addition to these favourites, programs like The Muppets, Galavant, The Family and Agent Carter will also be ending this year.

I'm sad to see Nashville end. I watched the show early on when it started a few years ago and I recently binge-watched every episode when it was on Netflix. Fun fact: I still have 'Buried Under' from the first season on my playlist! It's also a shame to see Agent Carter go since it is a favourite with superhero fans.
ABC didn't just hand out bad news day, they had some good news for other waiting programs. American Crime, The Real O'Neals and The Catch were renewed for another season each.

Supergirl is making a super move over to a new station. One of television's breakout freshman shows is finding a new home on the CBS sister network, The CW, for its upcoming second season. Announced Thursday among a slew of other TV renewals and cancellations, Supergirl's fate was left up in the air as CBS determined costs for the bubble show.
While the show started off strong for the 2015-2016 season, the show ultimately declined in ratings to a respectable 10 millions viewers, with DVR numbers included. Rumours were popping up that the show may have been moving to The CW, where the network is home to other superhero shows. With this news confirmed, Supergirl will also be moving production to Vancouver to be filmed near other network shows, like Arrow and Flash.
In addition to the Supergirl renewal, The CW announced the cancellation of Containment and three new series pickups. Riverdale, the modern adaption of the Archie Comics, has been picked up to series, along with Frequency and No Tomorrow. For more about these new shows, I briefly discussed them when the network had ordered their pilots.
I'm VERY excited to see Riverdale - it looks to be an interesting take on the show and could prove refreshing with the superhero shows on the network. As a fan of The CW programming, it will be on my must-watch list for the upcoming TV year.

Archie and friends are getting a makeover for a new generation. The soda pop gang, who still rules the Sunday morning comics, is potentially being revamped into a brand new TV series on The CW. Receiving a pilot episode order, Riverdale is a modern take on the comic book series. The show will follow the lives of Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends as they move through quiet small town life and discover the secrets of Riverdale.
Riverdale joins a collection of five other pilots ordered by the younger-skewing network. There's period piece Transylvania, which is about a young woman in search of her father while fighting infamous monsters, a romantic-comedy No Tomorrow, a TV remake of Frequency, the Untitled Mars Project set on the red planet, and the equally mysterious Kevin Williamson pilot.
The CW has been having a great year in terms of their TV shows and ratings. They struck gold in awards season and fans are loving their high-concept shows, especially their superhero dramas. However, they didn't pick up many new shows last year, and it's expected that a few of their older series could be getting the axe this year. America's Next Top Model and Beauty and the Beast are already cancelled, but who could be next to make room? Reign? Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? The Vampire Diaries? The unaired Containment?
If I had a choice, I would love to see Riverdale, the Kevin Williamson pilot, Transylvania and the Untitled Mars Project (in that order) get a series order. But we're talking about The CW here...we'll never know what they decide until May 2016.

James Bond is ready to head out on his next death-defying adventure and finally the mission has a name. Revealed on Thursday at Pinewood Studios in London, Bond 24 will officially be known as 'Spectre'.
The official synopsis for the film is as follows: "A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE." (via Independent UK)
Spectre will feature many of the returning cast members from Skyfall, like Daniel Craig (James Bond), Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny) and Ben Whishaw (Q). Joining the cast this time around will feature a few new characters like Andrew Scott (Denbigh), David Bautista (Mr. Hinx), Christoph Waltz (Oberhauser), and upcoming Bond Girls Léa Seydoux and Monica Belucci as Madeleine Swann and Lucia Sciarra, respectively. Bond is nothing without his automobile, which will be the Aston Martin DB10.
Many details are still being kept under wraps but rumours are swirling that longtime iconic 007 supervillain, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, will make his reintroduction to the series with this film. Spectre is set to be released on November 6, 2015.

May is finally here and that only means one thing: pilot season is almost coming to an end. The network upfronts are set for next week and the networks will be unveiling their new line-ups and series orders. Unfortunately, many shows will be getting the axe this week to make room - similar to the recent announcement that Almost Human was cancelled by Fox after one season. Before the bad news starts coming in, let's enjoy the good news of renewals and series pick-ups.
While many naturally assumed this pilot as a lock for the 2014-2015 season, Fox has announced on May 5th that the pilot will become a series. Gotham, the comic book origin story of Commissioner Gordon (played by Benjamin McKenzie) and DC's super-villains, has been ordered to series to join previously picked pilots such as Heiroglyph and Backstrom.
In other renewal news, WGN America has renewed Salem for a second season. The supernatural period-piece accumulated great numbers for the network, scoring the honour of being the network's most-watched show in years. Salem is slated to hopefully return in 2015 for a 13-episode second season.
Check out the extended trailer below to get a closer look at the new series.

Save the cheerleader, save the world! Remember when that used to be a thing? (Wow...I just showed my age.)
Announced yesterday from the peacock network, NBC has officially decided to revive their X-Men/superhero-like drama Heroes from the TV grave for an initial 13-episode miniseries. The new television event, Heroes Reborn, will be set to air in 2015. No word yet has been revealed if any of the original characters and cast will return to the new series.
For those of you unfamiliar with the show, Heroes was a smash hit action series in 2006 that featured everyday people discovering that they were developing superpowers. The first season received immense buzz and viewer popularity that it seemed like the show would continue to progress but it faltered in later seasons, being cancelled in 2010 after its fourth season. The show stared hit performers like Zachary Quinto, Hayden Panettiere, Ali Larter, Adrian Pasdar, Milo Ventimigilia and a revolving door of other main characters, recurring and guests - it was a big show with a large cast.
I'm interested to see how this new series of Heroes will pan out, especially since a revival has been rumoured since MSN was in talks to bring it back. I watched the show for the first three seasons before walking away from it - too much kept happening to follow and it lost its edge near the end. Maybe things will turn around in 2015? A lot can happen in a year and diehard fans must be excited to see their show come back.

Send out the Bat-Signal - I'm too excited for the latest scoop. Revealed on Monday at the Television Critics Association (TCAs), Fox's Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly announced that the recently ordered to series Batman prequel Gotham will also introduce the origin stories of several important DC villains and characters from the Batman universe.
Originally intended to focus on the origins of future police Commissioner James Gordon and the criminals that torture Gotham City, Gotham will follow the journey of a young Bruce Wayne as he develops into the Dark Knight. The beginnings of several notable DC villains will be introduced before they fought head-to-head with Batman, such as The Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman and much more.
While no production details have started except for the pilot script, Reilly did state that Bruce Wayne's story will follow him from around the age of 12 until he puts on the Batman cape in the series finale (whenever that may be).

Big changes are on the horizon for CTV and its sister network CTV Two.
Announced Thursday via two press releases (CTV and CTV Two), the Bell Media channels revealed their new revamped line-ups. The two brand new schedules saw several popular programs switch between the channels, with CTV acquiring more scripted shows while CTV Two retained more established favourites.
On the drama front, new shows heading to CTV will include INTELLIGENCE, Played, Hostages, Believe, The Tomorrow People and the highly anticipated comic book adaptation Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. CTV Two will be adding one brand new drama to its schedule with the historical piece Reign.
CTV's focus is on dramas this year but several new comedies will also be joining the network as well. Mixology, Spun Out, Trophy Wife, The Goldbergs and the return of Kirstie Alley in Kirstie will be the new dramas premiering this fall and midseason. Also revealed is the Canadian adaptation of the popular cooking reality show Masterchef Canada.
Schedule line-ups aren't always about the new shows acquired for the following year, it's also about the network changes. Among the new shows is Person Of Interest which had previously aired on City for the 2012-2013 season. American Idol, which has held its staple on CTV will air primarily on CTV Two midseason while The X Factor holds the spot in the fall.
Day two of the Canadian upfronts and Shaw Media is the next to unveil their new schedule.
Announced on Wednesday via press release, Shaw Media has picked up 7 new comedies and 11 new dramas for their flagship network Global. The order also revealed new details for programs returning to Global and similar Shaw Media specialty channels.
Cop dramas and supernatural entries are making its way to Global. Heading to the network this fall will include new programs like Sleepy Hollow, Ironside, The Blacklist, Almost Human and the romantic thriller Dracula. While only five new dramas will fill the schedule in the fall, Remedy, Chicago PD, Rake, Crossbones, Reckless and the highly anticipated return of Jack Bauer in 24: Live Another Day will launch midseason in 2014.
The return of certain big name comedy actors are returning as well. New shows such as We Are Men, Welcome To The Family, Sean Saves The World, The Millers and The Michael J. Fox Show will premiere in the fall, while About A Boy and Working The Engels are slated for midseason.
Scripted dramas weren't the only reveal made by Shaw Media. Big Brother Canada has been confirmed to return for season two with casting details to be released in the coming days or weeks. This is possibly the best news ever as I loved the first season and would have been upset for it not to return for another year.

The Canadian upfronts are now underway with the first schedule reveal.
Announced on Tuesday via press release, City has revealed their primetime schedule for the upcoming 2013-2014 season, as well as other Rogers pick-ups and orders for their specialty channels.

New orders for fall include Super Fun Night, Enlisted, Mom, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Crazy Ones, Back in the Game, and Dads, with Us & Them popping in for midseason. City has also chosen to order two original Canadian programming with Package Deal for fall and new animated adult comedy Mother Up! for midseason.

At first when you don't succeed, try again. But what happens when you fail twice?
Announced on Thursday, The CW has decided to pick up The 100, The Tomorrow People, Reign and Star-Crossed (formerly Oxygen) to series. The four new dramas join pilot The Originals, which was already picked up late April following it's backdoor pilot airing on The Vampire Diaries.
Contrary to earlier rumours that The CW could be focusing on only sci-fi and genre pilots, The CW has opted for high-concept orders that mix supernatural and teen. On the heavily sci-fi side of the pilots, The 100 follows 100 delinquent teens in a post-apocalyptic world sent back to Earth to determine whether it can be repopulated and The Tomorrow People which features a selection of youth discovering they have superpowers (this one is based on the 70's U.K. program of the same name).
Star-Crossed, which had been originally titled Oxygen, is a cross between District 9 and The Orion Legacies where a human girl falls in love with one of nine alien teenagers sent to attend her local high school. Reign might be the most surprising of the series orders since it centres on the teenage exploits of Mary, Queen of Scots and her ladies-in-waiting. Period pieces could be a hit-or-miss and since this is reaching a different audience, there's no telling how it could look come this fall/midseason.
Not all pilots get picked up to series and The Selection had two chances to make it work. Based on the young-adult novel series by Kiera Kass, The Selection featured a post-apocalyptic world where a competition is held every few generations to find the future queen. The pilot was originally developed for the 2012-2013 season but The CW had passed to redevelop with a new cast/script for the 2013-2014 contention season. Pilots also passed on were Company Town and Blink.

NBC is the second broadcast network to start their 2013-2014 series orders.
Coming off the heels of FOX's announcement on Wednesday, NBC has revealed another five pilots to officially get picked up for a season premiere. The current total is listed at three dramas and four comedies, with mini-series Dracula and comedy The Michael J. Fox Show already previously reported.
Continuing as the next two drama pick-ups are the high concept Crisis and the J.J. Abrams-helmed Believe. Crisis seems to be a political thriller that delves into an overarching conspiracy while Believe follows the relationship of a young gifted girl and the man tasked to protect her from evil. Between the two Crisis may be a little TOO complex for people to latch onto while Believe is definitely a series I want to check out. Plus, Kyle MacLachlan, Jamie Chung and Sienna Guillory are set to star, which is always a casting incentive.
The NBC Comedies are bringing back a lot of returning faces. Including Michael J. Fox in his sitcom, Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) will star in Sean Saves The World, a multi-cam sitcom about a man who tries to find the balance of parenting and appeasing a new boss. Television adaptation About A Boy and sitcom Family Guide join NBC's new comedy line-up as well.
More news (and long awaited cancellations/renewals) could be coming in as the day goes on.

FOX must be on a spending spree since they've practically finished their series orders in one day.
As reported on Wednesday by TVLine (for comedies and dramas), FOX has revealed an astounding nine series orders for their 2013-2014 season. The pick-ups come on the heels of the network's upfront event scheduled for next week where they will reveal their new line-up.
Police ensembles are the highlight for FOX next year. Included in their drama orders is the J.J. Abrams' futuristic cop thriller Almost Human, which was buzzed as a sure-thing for weeks now. An adaptation of the classic Headless Horseman tale Sleepy Hollow was also ordered, as well undercover cop thriller Gang Related and legal drama Rake. Based on descriptions alone, I'd love to see how Almost Human and Sleepy Hollow turn out - J.J. Abrams has impressed me with his previous work and I really liked the tale of Sleepy Hollow as a child.
The comedies are another story for FOX as it is their bread and butter. Among the previously ordered sitcom Dads, FOX has picked-up the Andy Samberg comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, family comedy Enlisted, the Chris Meloni sitcom Surviving Jack and romantic-comedy Us & Them.
