Can you believe it's been eight years since this blog was created? I started this website as a hobby in my PR class as a way to help develop my writing and express my passions in content. Originally, my writing was sub-par, had glaring errors in it, and I covered a lot of broad topics from daily life to news. The progression naturally turned to my geek interests, like TV, movies, gaming, and other highlights in nerdom/geekdom. As I grew in life, so did this blog.
September 2018 marks eight years since when this blog originally launched as The Unwritten Journal. Even the name focused on being more of a personal blog that covered my daily life and interests. Four years after that launch, I rebranded the site to become City Boy Geekiness, and the content became more streamlined to cover geek topics. A year after that rebranding, my writing passion expanded beyond blogging into freelance writing and journalism. Though, now life has reached to this moment.
For the last several months, I've been focusing a lot on my priorities and taking a bigger interest in my well-being. Yoga, meditation, and organization have helped to balance things out; it's also pushed me to realign and focus on my goals in life. I'm a determined and ambitious type of person - I love keeping busy and signing up for new opportunities/experiences. Arguably, this has been both a blessing and a curse because I get to develop my skills and passions, but I also take on too much as an active person. If you head into the archived posts timeline, you can see when the lack of blog posts began.
As much as I love writing on this blog, other priorities came up that felt more closely attuned to where I was in life. The blog has tried to stay in the loop, but it's come to the point that I need to admit the truth: City Boy Geekiness, as an active viable blog, needs to end.
It's been a great eight years posting along with you, but my focus mainly is going to be elsewhere in the journalism world. I'll update this site with some new page links, and there might be an occasional post or two in the future. But, this is my metaphorical goodbye message.
Keep in touch with me on any of my social channels (links are above)! Also, follow along with my contributor/staff writer posts. Let's stay geeky together, and don't forget to be geeky always. :)
It's that time of year again! Prepare yourselves for a bit of frustration and patience: I'm updating the layout of the website. (I can hear your groans now.)
The current design of the blog has served its purpose, but I've reached the point where I need a bit of change. Something with colour, a redesigned (and more in-tuned) SEO, and updated features. Surprisingly, I've kept the current layout around for longer than I expected. Though, it could be due to being incredibly busy with my freelance writing the last year.
Don't get me wrong, I do like this blog layout! This could be the layout that's been used the longest out of the last three/four design changes. However, I need something a bit easier to use, especially design wise.
Stay tuned for changes to come. I don't know when I will be starting the update; I still need to search for a new layout. If you have any suggestions, flip your recommendations my way.
I love London. There's something about the culture or the accent that pulls me in; it's always been on my bucket list to visit it someday. Before this year and trip, I had never traveled to the city, to Europe, or even across the ocean to another continent. This was a first for me and a trip that was LONG overdue. I don't get to travel often, so this was a gift to myself. The problem now is that I miss it so much - I want to go back!
After 10 days of walking around the city and sightseeing, my camera was obviously by my side to snap a bunch of photos. And being the geeky guy that I am, I made a point to see (or, in some cases, stumble upon) equally geek and nerdy places.
Without sharing every single photo I took, here are seven moments that I think you might like:
1. THE HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD SIGN
2. STUMBLING UPON THE BBC
3. PLATFORM 9 3/4
4. RESISTING THE URGE TO BUY EVERYTHING RAVENCLAW AT PLATFORM 9 3/4
5. THE SET OF THE SPICE GIRLS' "WANNABE"
6. WATCHING ALADDIN
7. FINDING THIS HOME ALONE SIGN
November is going to be a busy time for me (but when is it never busy?). While new posts on this blog have become few and far between, it doesn't mean I've stopped writing. Neither have I given up on this blog - I will, always will be, City Boy Geekiness.
As I mentioned in previous blog posts, I've been building out my freelance writing and journalism career with news, entertainment and geeky articles. I've updated the section on this site so that you can follow along with all the new pieces I'm creating online. I'm no longer with EW's The Community, but I'm still creating ongoing content for The Young Folks. In addition to that, I've joined two new places: One as a freelance contributor and the other as a Staff Writer.
I don't want to give any hints for the contributor site just yet. However, the first post for the Staff Writer position is now up. I'll be covering Salem for TV Fanatic! Here is the link to the article: HERE. I hope you follow along.
Don't fret! I'll be scheduling a few more posts for this site during this weekend. Stay tuned!
I haven't abandoned all of you incredible people. This blog is still alive and kicking! I refuse the gravestone.
Summer came in and filled my schedule with a few pressing things that I needed to get done. I mentioned in a previous blog post that something came up that was weighing on my mind and I needed to focus on. I've definitely worked towards it since then. This summer was a time for relaxation, rest and recuperation! For those of you who have been following my Instagram feed, it has been a busy few weeks.
This summer wasn't only about the events and moments that I experienced. I also branched out to write more and contribute about my favourite topics. On top of my work for Entertainment Weekly's The Community, I've now also become a writer at The Young Folks. I just finished my fourth post; third overall about Big Brother 17. While I might not be writing a lot on this website every or so often, I'm still here and will keep writing for you all. You can absolutely check out my other work as well.
Here are a few pieces from TYF:

Hey all!
Sorry for the delay in uploading a new post. There are just a few things happening in my life right now that I need to focus on and think about. The break might be for a short while, but I will be back soon and I will try to get a new post up soon. Don't worry! I'm fine and everything is good; it's just one of those months.
Until then!
I'm the worst. I couldn't keep my resolution for the year. Not even a week after proclaiming I would write 52 blog posts in 52 days straight, I stopped blogging and became preoccupied again. I really did try! I had the motivation, the determination, and the urge to prove myself wrong. What went wrong?! I think I just get too tired when I get home.
My time away hasn't been wasted. I did start writing again, but this time it was solely about TV shows. As of Monday, I started contributing to Entertainment Weekly's EW Community page. Two of my posts have already gone up: a piece exploring the relationship status of Revenge's Nolan Ross and Louise Ellis, and a recap of MTV's cyber drama Eye Candy. I love chatting about TV shows and I can't wait to cover more topics. Check them out and stay tuned for more to come!
Don't worry all, I won't be going away. This website is still near and dear to my heart. I will still be creating consistent content on entertainment news, video games, movies, and of course, TV. I'll try and come on here soon! I'm in the mood for writing a post about video games next.
My blogging habits aren't the same as most writers. Occasionally I will create a post every few days or weeks; potentially a few posts back-to-back if there is something I really want to talk about. It gives me time to have a breather and work at my own pace. In the worst case scenario, real life just becomes too busy with other priorities that sometimes I don't create a new post for a while. I hate when that happens and 2014 was a perfect example. It's time for a change and a little motivation to get me started. Cue the montage music...
Fifty-two. That is the number of posts and articles I wrote last year alone just for this site. It's a good number, it's basically one post a week. Though, I think I can beat that number. I want to keep writing more geeky content for you all - like TV shows, video games, movies, music and the occasional bits about my life. But nobody really cares about that last one, it's all about the good stuff!
Starting today I'm going to set a 52-day challenge. Every day for 52 days straight I will create a new post or article for this blog. It can be anything really: lists, recaps for TV shows, reviews for video games and movies, articles, editorials, music videos, pictures of cute animals... the skies the limit. However, I will try to add a little variety in the mix beyond just the same-old-same-old.
I'll be sharing the second post in the series beginning tomorrow and should hopefully meet my goal by March 1st, 2015. If there's anything you want me to cover, definitely let me know. I can't wait to start and see if I can actually pull this off. Winter is not my best-friend so I will try my hardest to do this.
Stay tuned!
Hey everyone,
It must be that time of the year because I couldn`t resist updating the blog yet again. The former design, while great, didn`t feel right anymore and I wanted to try something that was much more visually appealing. The colour scheme is different, the main page slider is gone and a new background header has been included. What do you think?
There are still some tiny updates that I need to make but I`m basically done. I`m enjoying the new look. Plus, more features have been added to help with the search functionality and navigation. Let me know how things go!
Cheers,
Justin
Hey everyone!
Just a quick message to say that this website is currently under construction. I've recently updated the URL and have been changing all the links to the appropriate new settings. It's been three years since the last time I've done a major update with the links so it may take a while to be fully finished. Stay tuned!
Change can be a good thing.
It's only the third day in 2014 and I'm ready to update a few items online. For those of you who have followed this site in the last year, I love experimenting with the look and feel of this blog. New colours, adding in the main slider, new features and creating a TV humour Tumblr were just a few new things for 2013.
Casually through the year, I've been toying around with a few ideas and thoughts for the site. I started this blog almost four years ago back in college when I wanted to improve my writing style and talk about life. My style has changed and the focus of this blog has shifted to hobbies instead (while still casually writing about life). The one thing that stayed the same was the name of this blog: The Unwritten Journal. What started as a temporary fix and placeholder in 2010 has stayed with me throughout the years, but I've always known that I wanted to change the name to be more attuned to the focus on the blog now. Suffice it to say, I've spent a little too much time thinking about this and I think I've come up with a name.
Throughout the next few days and weeks I'll be updating the site, fixing a few of the colours and adding the new name. This also means a new URL link to the website as I will be changing that as well. I will still be keeping the current URL but it will be focused elsewhere. The content of the website will not change - there will still be a focus on TV, movies, video games and other topics that I post about - only the name and colour scheme will be updated.
Sorry in advance if a few technical problems should arise; definitely let me know if anything comes up. In the meantime, I hope you're excited for new things as I am - it's going to be a great year!
The unthinkable happened: I created a tumblr.
As mentioned weeks ago in my previous blog post, I debated whether to create one or solely stick with my other accounts. It looked fun to do, might be something quick to manage, and a great way to have a few laughs. Yes... I drank the Kool-Aid.
My Tumblr is called "TV Said It, Not Me" and it's basically about television quotes (with some real life and movie quotes) thrown in that interest me. I love finding hilarious and dramatic posts directly from my favourite shows; though, anything that catches me eye will get thrown in too.
I find it quite relaxing. It reminds me of Pinterest where I can just sign on and share a few posts throughout the day. This website and blog is still my top priority for full content and updates - the tumblr will be a great way to have a few laughs. Feel to check it out with the link above!
Back from my second trip... ever!
It's been a few weeks since my last post and I'm really sorry for the delay. Life was a little hectic with a lot of changes: planning for my first flyaway work trip, celebrating that my older brother moved out of the house and now adjusting to a bigger role.
As the pictures included suggest, I went to Montreal this weekend for Osheaga. It was an amazing festival! Three days of hours hours but the music was incredible and I got the chance to visit a city on my bucket list. I took a few photos and videos while I was there and you can check them out on my Instagram account.
Now that I'm back, I'll start updating the blog again and catch up on the Big Brother eviction posts. Stay tuned!

Thought you'd enjoy this picture. The crowd kept going! |
Am I drinking the Kool-Aid?
Yes. There's no doubt about it. I've held off on starting my own Tumblr page as I've enjoyed just writing on this blog and managing my own accounts. Seemed like a simpler time ago of just posting and pinning - oh, how yesterday felt!
I've toyed around with the idea and if I decide to do it, I'd probably do fun GIFs I find online. This is still an idea and we'll see if I actually move forward and create one in the end. It would not replace the blog and this website - this site is still my #1 - it would add to the fun.
For those of you who have your own page, is it worth it to create one? I've followed a few sites and there are some that look alright. Might give it a try and share with you all how it goes in a future post.

Being that this was going to be my first time out of the country (let alone the province), I had high hopes. No, it wasn't a solo trip or with any of my close friends. The adventure was for my brother's bachelor party and I traveled with 11 other guys for four full days of sun, sights and parties.
The hype probably threw me off before I arrived in the city. Everyone kept talking about Vegas (not as a place but a thing) like an experience I would never forget and in some ways I won't. There were DJs like Steve Aoki and Calvin Harris, pool parties, clubs we went to like Hakkasan, and even ironically I went to Zumanity without realizing the concept of the show that made the trip memorable. No instagram photos, though! There are some moments that I didn't think needed to be shared.
I did expect to have a better time. Those first few days became clear that this might be one long obligation for the bachelor party instead of a vacation. More time to myself would have helped and I didn't get a little until the end of my third day. The next trip will be someplace that I'll get to travel and explore by myself or with friends. Don't get me wrong, I did have fun - it just could have been a little different.
London? Monte Carlo? Montreal? I'm not afraid of flying so anything is possible.
Some new improvements are on the way.
As you may have noticed, the previous layout and blog design changed from the original Blogspot setting. About three weeks ago I decided that I was tired of the design and I wanted to try something different. A new format that would be visually appealing and could offer more for everyone that visited this website. Well, I've decided to try something new again and in the next few days, the layout could look completely different than this current version.
Don't get me wrong - I like the current layout! It's just that I might want to try a template that will offer another visual and user-friendly style. Though, if I don't find something that appeals to me, I could leave the website as is.
There may be fewer posts for the next few days until I finish with the changes and updates. A couple posts may pop up here and there but I'll keep you updated with my process. Also, if you have any suggestions definitely send them my way!
There's going to be a scheduled hiatus for the next two weeks.
Starting today and going on until the end of next week, I won't be writing episode recaps. My real life responsibilities are coming into play and I'll be missing the episodes when they air. Event work, organizing, planning and writing - oh the tasks that come with the job. It doesn't feel the same to write the recap days to a week later after it's already aired.
For shows like The Carrie Diaries, Revenge and The Following, I'll be holding off until then. However, if I can find the time in between or can watch the episode at an opportune and timely moment, I'll try writing something quickly. Cult was a one time occurrence and the Big Brother posts are completely separate.
I'll still try and post sometime soon. The website updates are always on my radar and will last longer than expected. In that time, if you have any suggestions on which shows I should recap, definitely post below.
Some of you may have noticed the theme and layout of the site has changed. There is a new feature's slide, random posts area, a more detailed header and other improvements. However, for the last two days, I've been trying to update a few more areas and finish the edits.
If something seems wrong or it's changed randomly, it might be me updating the website. Improvements should be completely in the next few days.
Stay tuned!
